Hand Painted Signs with Gold Leaf

In October 2019 Hang Tough Gallery showcased 10 new artworks from Vanessa with her solo exhibition - ‘Threesome’.

Inspired by pop art movement’s Robert Indiana and Ed Ruscha, who embraced the vocabulary of post war America signage to explore themes of identity and social injustice - Vanessa used three letter words to elicit a range of responses.

Using traditional woodblock typefaces from the National Print Museum as inspiration, and recreating three-dimensional versions to be used as references, each large-scale design is crafted directly onto glass using traditional sign-writing gilding techniques.

Experimentation is at the heart of Vanessa’s work and this is evident in her application of materials including: Italian 23ct gold leaf, mother of pearl shell and iridescent glitter.

How can she help you share your vision?
